The Fertility Chip

The Glass Room Berlin / New York / London / San Francisco

A birth control chip implanted in a woman’s body that can be activated remotely by the user and which can dispense contraceptives over a period of 16 years. If the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has its way, what may sound like science fiction to some will soon become a reality. In 2012, the foundation supported the Microchips Biotech group with 8 million pounds in their research on a product that is intended especially for economically weak regions of the world.

Since the potential for abuse of the chip is obvious and reminiscent of dystopian scenarios, “The Fertility Chip” asks to whom we would like to entrust our (bio)technologies.

The chip model lasered into acrylic glass is presented on a transparent base under a display case and looks like a piece of jewellery due to its gold-plated recesses.
