Notes on an Apology Tour

“Move fast and break things.” Mark Zuckerberg’s motto aptly sums up Facebook’s expansion policy. But with the seemingly unstoppable rise of the company, criticism is growing about how they handle data and other issues such as the spread of mis and disinformation on their platforms.

Insight into Zuckerberg’s strategies of dealing with criticism were found in a photo of his notes for the US Senate hearing in 2018 which revealed a series of apologies and defences. La Loma’s “Notes on an Apology Tour” consists of Zuckerberg’s text and a Rolodex containing all the questions he was asked before the Senate and the EU Parliament.

The notes, flanked by collected apologies, promises, lessons and acknowledgements from the company founder from 2003 to the present, suggest that Zuckerberg’s motto could instead be: “And when things are broken: apologise and move on faster”.
