La Loma’s “The Hive” offers a glimpse into the “Multilevel Fulfillment Center” patented by Amazon. This innovative building efficiently solves the logistical problem of the constantly growing demand for online shopping, closely following the model of a beehive. In order to keep Amazon’s promise of faster and smoother deliveries, the condensed processes are organized in such a way that as few “human workers” as possible are necessary. Instead, almost all tasks in the central building are carried out by robots, while delivery drones fly in and out through small openings.
According to further patents, the inventory will soon be secured by “aquatic storage facilities” located in natural waters. Ordered items automatically rise to the surface in airtight bladders and are seamlessly fed into the delivery process.
La Loma implemented the construction plans for “The Hive” as an acrylic block consisting of 30 panels. Visitors to the exhibition can explore the individual levels by moving a torch in order to shift the details of Amazon’s patent idea layer by layer into the light.
