LIDAR

Driverless: Who is in Control?

The data that autonomous cars record via their cameras goes far beyond what is necessary for road safety. The lidar system not only scans intersections, obstacles and pedestrians, but also details such as faces, number plates and even the interior of parked cars in three dimensions.

La Loma used such a treasure trove of data to reconstruct a complete street segment and to print it in a layered acrylic block for the work “Lidar”. Visitors to the Science Museum London were able to interactively illuminate the detailed panorama with LEDs during a special exhibition and understand how much information is generated by a passing car alone.

  • development of the interactive concept
  • filtering and optimisation of the 3D point cloud
  • selection and editing of the 3D point scene for correct application in 2D layers
  • transfer to 60 layered acrylic glass plates
  • preparation of the data for production
