At the end of 2015, Loma was invited to Colombia to collaborate on a project experimenting with information visualisation. The connection with Bogota was initiated by the Reactant Collective. The Reactante Collective is defined as a catalyst and generator of focused practices on experimentation, research, development and bringing to light processes that interrelate art, science and technology in Colombia.
This meeting resulted in DAT0 P0R LIEBRE, an event that took place at the Plataforma Bogota which is a public Medialab that promotes the convergence of art, science, technology, digital culture, open source and free software.
The Platform Bogota is located in the city centre, a space characterized by frequent and varied informal sales and socioeconomic activity which is being removed due to policies of the current mayor thus transforming the collective interaction of public areas.
In a workshop environment, participants had the opportunity to get deeply involved with informal economic data, especially with those drawn from the neighbourhood’s street vendors.
Dato (Data)
Information was taken from public sources and a poll was conducted of a group of street vendors. The goal was to explore diverging views on the informal economic dynamics in the face of district government policies, the planning of this activity and the recovery of public space facing.
por (for)
Participants defined their position analyzing and making visibles tensions which are generated between the street vendor and their environment, highlighting gaps in the information submitted by the institution about this subject. These included the informal sale vs formal business, the distinctive profile of the seller, the direct voice of the street seller in contrast to the point of view of public entities.
Liebre (Hare)
How does the analysis of the information depend on the point of view?
The constellation of the Hare (Lepus in Latin) is a metaphor for using the creative process to visualize data where understanding depends on the observer’s point of view. The mass of data is like the sky; to understand the complex universe one should simplify the data range presenting it in an accessible image
The workshop
La Loma shared its experience on data visualization with participants in four intensive workshop sessions and presented its approach through some of its projects. Though the creative visualization process La Loma generated in participants an honest look at analytical strategies, filtering and transformation of information.
The laboratory
An open working group was established with a commitment to understanding that visualization not only defines the relative position of the data but also the visualizer themself during the process of data translation to an understandable information.
The guests
DAT0 P0R LIEBRE was attended by five outstanding collaborators committed to analysis, data interpretation and experimentation with media tackling the most critical aspects of information visualization. They came to the laboratory to share their experiences and discuss the use and transformation of information in Colombia
